The Collector

Posted by on | |
With the economy only now making a slow recovery, it’s hard to think about collecting anything other than unemployment checks. Get ideas on things that are fun—and affordable—to collect.

Collecting things is a lifelong hobby for many people, and despite what some may think, you don’t need to be swimming in the dough to enjoy the fun and pleasure that comes form collecting things. Many people will automatically think of the more expensive collectibles that get so much attention, like art, jewelry or even cars! But you don’t need to limit yourself because you don’t have the money to dish out on a Yuan dynasty porcelain vase. You can get just as much, if not more, enjoyment from collecting less expensive collectibles, or even everyday objects that hold special meaning to you.

Where to Find Good Deals

Estate sales are often very good places to find antique collectibles on the cheap. Often, people don’t put enough research into what they are selling, so you might find a Hummel figurine for $5 which you later find out can be sold for $500. If you are looking to turn a profit on your collectibles (as many collectors are) estate sales are a great place to find under priced collectibles. Just be sure to do your research so that you know what you are looking for when visiting an estate sale.

Things That May Be Worth Money In The Future

Have you ever kicked yourself for selling off all your vintage albums the first time you caught a glimpse of those shiny cassette disks? There are many things that are very common now, that may be rare in the future. Think about the comic books and stamps of yesteryear! Well, I haven’t even seen a real stamp in at least 8 years! Things that are a testament to the times we live in (and which will probably be obsolete in the future) have real potential for being genuine collectible items when your children or their children are grown.

The “Just For Fun” Collectors

Some people collect thing simply for the fun of it, without any other motive at all. Some couples, for instance, like to collect little mementos that they can keep with them for the rest of their lives, like rocks engraved with the dates of their yearly camping trips, or special shells from whenever they take a trip to the beach. These types of collectibles have no monetary value, but they often hold great sentimental value.

Going for the Record

If you’re looking to have a whole lot of fun, why not try collecting “the most” of something. Some of the most absurd collections that have actually made the Guinness Book of World Records include rubber ducks, traffic cones and sick bags from airplanes!
