Drugs and alcohol may be fun, but how do they affect your libido, your ability to perform, and your health in general? Our medical expert gives you the straight dope -
Contrary to popular belief the way to a more pleasurable sexual experience is not to use drugs and alcohol. The initial effects can be very pleasurable, to be sure, but the long term affects can ruin your sex drive and even make you more susceptible to some of the worst STD’s. Here are three of the main drugs that are used recreationally to enhance the sexual experience and why they are doing much more harm than good.
Cocaine –
Cocaine comes in many different forms. It can be smoked, snorted or injected into your blood stream. Many people use this as a recreational drug even though the results can be highly addicting and can even cause death. Cocaine is a stimulant, so it gives your body a big burst of energy. This allows you to have sex longer. The problem with this is that you are also less sensitized to feeling and touch. This means that you could actually be damaging your sex organs through rougher sex, and not even realize it, and these small breaks in your skin make you more prone to STD’s. Also, if you are a chronic user, your libido will actually start to decline. The originally burst of libido that you felt when you originally started taking the drug will begin to wear off and you may have a hard time achieving an erection or getting “in the mood”.
Marijuana –
This is the most widely used illegal drug. Its effects can be very calming and relaxing and may lower your desire for sex. Some people report increased sexual desire when using marijuana, but others feel too “detached” to have good sex with their partner. Another reason that having sex while using marijuana is not a good idea, is because it makes you less inhibited and more likely to be involved in unprotected and dangerous sex.
Ecstasy –
From the name, you might expect this drug to be on the top of the list when it comes to enhancing sexual experiences. However, this is not the case. People on E rarely feel sexually attracted to others. They do enjoy the sensation of touch and human contact much more in the heightened state ecstasy puts them into, but this more of a “universal love” and they are rarely sexually aroused through touch. This means that men will often have a hard time attaining an erection, and women will not be properly aroused if they do have sex, which leads to friction and tears in the vaginal wall that could lead to higher susceptibility to sexual transmitted infections. Also, if a man does achieve an erection, he may find it very difficult to achieve an orgasm. This leads to prolonged sex where neither partner is getting any enjoyment.
Alcohol –
While not an illegal drug, alcohol is commonly used a substance to induce sexual desire. In small amount it could have this desired affect. However, in large doses it affects the man’s ability to achieve an erection. It is also very difficult to enjoy sex in a drunken state. You will experience less pleasure since you are desensitized to what is happening around you. Although moderate alcohol consumption can make sex more enjoyable for women, as it lowers their inhibitions, if too much is consumed, sex will just be a blur and not enjoyable at all.
As you can see, sex, drugs and rock n’ roll were probably meant to come in that exact order… that is, if the sex was to be enjoyed. There is nothing like consensual sex between two adults that care about each other and muddying this experience with drugs would just be a shame.
